Elizabeth (S.C.) “As a Licensed Esthetician and self-described “product- junkie” I was very skeptical at first, when I tried Mary Kay’s mineral makeup. I have the worst skin type which is in my opinion, highly sensitive skin, but also prone to adult acne. Most mineral makeup containing bisthmuth oxychloride scratched and irritated my sensitive skin. This is due in part to jagged and rough edges that can be viewed under a microscope and cause micro rips and irritation of the skin. This ingredient is prevalent in some mineral make-ups because it is a cheap filler ingredient. Mary Kay mineral makeup did not have this which helped and also for that reason I was not left with a sheen on my face.(Bisthmuth O. is also famous for leaving behind a high shine.) The very last thing any oily gal wants! I felt matte and fresh all day! And because of the light texture I was pleased to see it did not settle into the fine lines I am beginning to experience! Also,,. I know that Mary Kay mineral makeup sure does what it says it will do, and having buildable coverage is nice too. Also no acne or sensitivity, and one of my very critical friends even noticed how even it made my skin look. (I have a few brown spots from old sun damage.) Not to be long-winded, but Mary Kay mineral makeup impressed myself and my critical friend. (shade match ivory 2 is PERFECT!)
Is bismuth in mineral makeup problematic? Two of the most common complaints about Mineral Makeup can be attributed to one ingredient, Bismuth. Bismuth is a mineral that is the main ingredient in Pepto-Bismol! For most users, the bismuth poses absolutely no problems and they love their minerals just the way they are. For some users, the bismuth causes itching, especially if they get very warm and/or their face sweats. Another effect of bismuth is the “glow” that some users love and some hate. It seems to me that users that tend to have oilier skin do not like the “glow” and prefer a more matte finish.
It has been found that patients with too high bismuth developed problems in walking, standing or writing, deterioration of memory, changes in behaviour, insomnia and muscle cramps, menstrual difficulties, polycystic ovaries, inflammation of the mucous membranes inside the mouth, inflammation of the skin, inflammation in general, together with several emotional/mental symptoms. The manifest phase started abruptly and was characterized by changes in awareness, muscle spasms, lack of coordination and/or legs trembling and impairment of the tongue and speech problems. Bismuth is a component of many cosmetic preparations and therefore contamination is common. It impairs both hormones and metabolic energy production and MAY SOMETIMES lead to weight gain. TWO LEADING Mineral BRANDS that contain BISMUTH: Sheer cover and Bare Escentuals! Please avoid them.
